Ron Mason conceived the Christavia Mk4 in 1982 with exacting requirements for missionary aviation work in remote locations. The design specifications demanded short takeoff and landing capabilities, minimal fuel consumption through a small engine, low stall speeds for safety, adequate cruise performance, spacious cabin accommodations, minimal maintenance requirements, and robust construction with high safety margins. These demanding criteria shaped every aspect of the aircraft's development over the subsequent four-year design and testing period.
Development and First Flight
Mason's methodical approach to development culminated in the prototype's maiden flight on January 3, 1986. The four-year development cycle allowed extensive refinement of the aircraft's systems and construction methods, ensuring the design would meet its intended operational requirements. The prototype testing validated the aircraft's performance parameters, confirming its 48-mile-per-hour stall speed and 130-mile-per-hour maximum velocity.
Construction and Technical Innovation
The Christavia Mk4 employs a hybrid construction approach combining proven materials and techniques. The fuselage utilizes welded 4130 steel tubing for strength and durability, while the wings feature all-wooden construction with doped aircraft fabric covering. Later production versions incorporated aluminum wing spars for improved longevity. Mason developed a custom airfoil section specifically for the wing design, which mounts flaps and is supported by V-struts with jury strut reinforcement.
The 22-foot 3-inch fuselage houses a four-seat enclosed cabin with door access, prioritizing passenger comfort for extended flights. The 177.3 square feet of wing area provides the low-speed handling characteristics essential for operations from short, unprepared airstrips.
Powerplant and Performance
The standard powerplant consists of a Lycoming O-320 four-cylinder, air-cooled engine producing 150 horsepower, driving a two-bladed fixed-pitch propeller. This engine selection balances adequate performance with operational simplicity and parts availability in remote locations. The combination delivers a cruise speed of 120 miles per hour, a service ceiling of 19,000 feet, and a rate of climb of 800 feet per minute.
With 41 gallons of fuel capacity, the aircraft achieves a 400-mile range, sufficient for typical missionary aviation missions. The 2,200-pound gross weight accommodates a 1,100-pound useful load, equally divided between empty weight and payload capacity.
Production and Distribution
Elmwood Aviation, based in Frankford, Ontario, marketed the Christavia Mk4 through construction plans rather than completed aircraft. This approach made the design accessible to amateur builders while reducing production costs. By 1998, Mason reported 250 completed examples were flying worldwide. Over 1,000 sets of plans have been sold across all Christavia variants, though the Mk4 represents the most refined iteration.
Mason eventually sold the design rights to Aircraft Spruce & Specialty Company, which continues marketing the plans and complete materials packages. The estimated construction time from plans totals 2,600 hours, making it accessible to dedicated homebuilders.
Service Reality vs. Design Intent
Despite its mission-specific design origins, the Christavia Mk4 found limited adoption in actual missionary aviation service. Instead, the aircraft gained popularity within the homebuilding community, where its spacious cabin, docile handling characteristics, and straightforward construction appealed to amateur builders seeking a capable four-seat aircraft.
One notable example, constructed by Philip Groelz in Oregon, required nearly 20 years to complete, finishing in 2014 with custom modifications including GlaStar-inspired wing strakes and a Continental O-200 engine substitution. This extended construction timeline reflects both the complexity involved in amateur aircraft construction and the dedication of individual builders to the project.
Current Status and Legacy
As of December 2016, only five examples remained registered with the Federal Aviation Administration in the United States, with eight additional aircraft registered with Transport Canada. These modest registration numbers reflect both the specialized nature of homebuilt aircraft and the challenges of maintaining experimental category aircraft over extended periods.
The Christavia Mk4's legacy lies in its demonstration that purpose-built designs can successfully transition between intended roles. While it never achieved widespread adoption in missionary aviation, the aircraft proved the viability of combining rugged construction, simple systems, and spacious accommodations in a homebuilt design.
