The E-Z King Cobra emerged from a specific customer request to Wayne Winters for an ultralight-category scale replica of a World War II fighter aircraft. Winters, founder and president of Blue Yonder Aviation, developed the design based on his earlier EZ Merlin aircraft, incorporating proven aerodynamic principles with the distinctive visual appeal of the original P-63 Kingcobra.
Winters created a new cantilever wing design derived from the Merlin wing configuration, which itself traced its lineage to the successful Lazair wing design. The fuselage construction utilizes welded 4130 steel tube framework, providing structural integrity while maintaining the characteristic lines of the original fighter. The aircraft retains Junkers-style ailerons from the Merlin design, combined with a Clark Y airfoil section and innovative construction featuring a leading-edge D-cell structure with foam ribs.
Manufacturing and Production History
Blue Yonder Aviation operated from a unique facility in Indus, Alberta, where the company's aviation heritage spans multiple generations. The property was originally acquired in 1914 by Miltor L. Winters from the Canadian Pacific Railway. Ralph C. Winters, Wayne's father and a World War II veteran, purchased the land in 1946 and established the first runway in 1970. Wayne Winters assumed control when his father retired, continuing the family's aviation legacy.
The company began aircraft manufacturing in 1996 after purchasing rights to the Merlin aircraft design from Merlin Aircraft. Operations were conducted in a converted agricultural building on the property, where Blue Yonder produced approximately 50 Merlin aircraft and 30 EZ Flyer aircraft before expanding into the King Cobra project.
Despite extensive demonstration flights and marketing efforts, the E-Z King Cobra failed to achieve commercial success. Only the single prototype was ever constructed, and no additional orders materialized. Blue Yonder Aviation's website was discontinued in late 2016, suggesting the company ceased operations.
Technical Specifications and Performance
The prototype E-Z King Cobra is powered by an Austrian-manufactured Rotax 582 two-stroke engine producing 64 horsepower. The aircraft's design accommodates multiple powerplant options, including the 50-horsepower Rotax 503 and the 80-horsepower four-stroke Rotax 912, allowing builders to tailor performance to specific requirements and regulations.
Measuring 21 feet in length with a 27-foot wingspan and standing 6 feet high, the aircraft features 158 square feet of wing area. The empty weight of 543 pounds allows for a useful load of 657 pounds within the maximum gross weight of 1,200 pounds. This configuration provides excellent power-to-weight ratio characteristics typical of ultralight aircraft.
Performance figures demonstrate the aircraft's capability across a wide flight envelope. Maximum speed reaches 120 mph, while normal cruise speed is 90 mph. The remarkably low stall speed of 30 mph provides excellent short-field capabilities and pilot confidence during approach and landing phases. Range extends to 460 miles, and the service ceiling reaches 14,000 feet, specifications that exceed many aircraft in the ultralight category.
Regulatory Classification and Market Position
The E-Z King Cobra was designed to meet Canadian basic ultralight and amateur-built aircraft regulations, though it was not certified as an advanced ultralight. This classification allowed the aircraft to be sold either as a completed aircraft or in kit form for amateur construction, targeting the growing homebuilt aircraft market of the late 1990s.
The aircraft received the ICAO type designator EZKC, formally recognizing it within international aviation identification systems despite its limited production status. This designation remains valid for the single flying example.
Legacy and Current Status
The E-Z King Cobra represents both the potential and limitations of niche aircraft design in the ultralight market. While the aircraft successfully achieved its design goals of providing an authentic-appearing World War II fighter replica within ultralight regulations, market demand proved insufficient to sustain production.
The sole prototype continues to serve as a testament to innovative Canadian aircraft design and the dedication of individual aircraft designers like Wayne Winters. The project demonstrates how modern materials and construction techniques can successfully recreate the appearance and some characteristics of historic military aircraft while meeting contemporary safety and regulatory requirements.
