Commercial Ambitions and Market Reality
The Stinson Model A entered service with ambitious goals but faced immediate challenges from superior competitors. American Airlines operated the type as a feeder liner on shorter routes, while the aircraft found its most sustained success with Australian Oriental Airlines beginning in 1935. Three examples arrived in Australia that year: VH-UVU Wichita on June 22, VH-UKK Townsville on July 22, and VH-UYY Grafton on December 14, 1936. These aircraft inaugurated the critical Sydney-Brisbane route and extended Queensland and New South Wales services, briefly filling capacity gaps left by Boeing 247 and Douglas DC-2 shortages.
However, the Model A was quickly outclassed by more advanced designs. Its fabric-covered steel tube fuselage with wooden wings represented outdated construction methods just as stressed-skin aluminum aircraft like the Boeing 247 were setting new standards. The eight-seat capacity, while including modern amenities like an onboard lavatory, could not compete with larger, faster aircraft entering service.
Wartime Adaptations and Australian Service
During World War II, the Australian examples gained new life through dramatic modifications. Australian National Airways, which had absorbed Australian Oriental Airlines by 1942, faced performance limitations with the original three Lycoming engines producing 780 total horsepower. In 1943, engineers at Essendon, Victoria, undertook radical conversions on the two surviving aircraft, Binana (VH-UKK) and Tokana (VH-UYY).
The conversion replaced the three Lycoming R-680-5 radials with two Pratt & Whitney Wasp engines producing 700 horsepower each. This modification increased total power to 1,400 horsepower while reducing engine weight by 126 pounds, from 1,546 to 1,420 pounds total. The twin-engine configuration required structural reinforcements but delivered significantly improved performance and higher operational speeds. These modified aircraft served crucial wartime routes including Brisbane-Cairns, Melbourne-Mildura-Broken Hill, and Melbourne-Tasmania connections.
The Stinson Aircraft Legacy
Stinson Aircraft Company, founded by aviator Eddie Stinson in 1920, had pioneered reliable Detroit-built aircraft throughout the 1920s. After Eddie Stinson's death in 1932, the company shifted focus toward larger airliners like the Model A, seeking to capitalize on the growing feeder airline market. By 1937, Aviation Corporation (AVCO) held controlling interest in Stinson, and the Model A's production from 1933 to 1936 occurred under increasing AVCO influence.
The company's vision, heavily influenced by financier E.L. Cord, focused on creating practical feeder airliners for short regional routes. However, the rapid pace of aviation development in the 1930s left traditionally constructed aircraft like the Model A obsolete almost immediately. AVCO continued Stinson operations until World War II, after which the Stinson name gradually faded into Lear Inc., later becoming part of Textron.
Technical Innovation and Limitations
The Model A's three Lycoming R-680-5 nine-cylinder air-cooled radial engines represented proven technology, each delivering 260 horsepower. Lycoming Engines, a division of AVCO, had produced the R-680 series from the late 1920s, though parts became increasingly scarce during World War II. The aircraft featured partially retracting landing gear, an innovation that unfortunately became notorious among pilots who frequently forgot to lower the gear for landing.
The design team's objectives included freight capability alongside passenger service, with the eight-seat cabin providing more comfort than many contemporary aircraft. However, the fabric-covered construction and mixed materials represented the end of an era rather than a step toward the future.
Production Numbers and Operational Challenges
Stinson manufactured exactly 31 Model A Tri-Motors at their Wayne, Michigan facility, a modest production run that reflected limited market acceptance. The aircraft's brief commercial career was marked by operational difficulties, including a catastrophic mid-air breakup in 1945 that killed 10 people and an Alaskan crash in 1947.
Surviving Legacy
Today, one airworthy Stinson Model A continues flying, maintained by the Mid America Flight Museum in Ottumwa, Iowa. This aircraft, originally the 1947 Alaska crash victim, underwent complete reconstruction in 1979 and 1988. The restoration included a new chrome-molybdenum steel frame, modern welding techniques, completely rebuilt Lycoming engines, and Hamilton Standard propellers.
The surviving aircraft represents more than mere nostalgia—it embodies the final chapter of American tri-motor airliner development and demonstrates how rapidly aviation technology advanced during the 1930s. While the Model A failed commercially, its Australian wartime modifications showcase the adaptability that kept older aircraft types viable when newer machines were unavailable.
