Development and Design Innovation
The C-295 emerged from CASA's ambitious project launched in November 1996 to create a substantially enlarged version of their successful CN-235 transport. Engineers stretched the fuselage by adding six frames—three forward and three aft of the wing—while reinforcing the landing gear with twin nosewheels for operations on unprepared airstrips. The prototype, converted from a CN-235, took its maiden flight on November 28, 1997, followed by the first production aircraft EC-296 Ciudad de Sevilla on December 22, 1998.
CASA's design team achieved their goal of increasing payload capacity by 50 percent over the CN-235 while maintaining the aircraft's ability to operate from short, rough airfields. The reinforced structure and more powerful Pratt & Whitney Canada PW127G turboprops, each delivering 2,645 horsepower through six-bladed propellers, provided the performance needed for demanding military operations.
Certification and Early Production
The aircraft received rapid certification approval, earning INTA military certification on November 30, 1999, followed by Spanish DGAC approval on December 3, 1999, and crucial FAA certification under FAR Part 25 on December 17, 1999. This comprehensive certification package opened global markets for the new transport.
Production commenced at CASA's San Pablo Sur facility in Seville in 1997, with large component pre-assembly handled at the nearby Tablada plant. The Spanish Air Force became the launch customer with an order for nine aircraft announced on April 30, 1999, providing crucial early validation for the program.
Military Service Excellence
The Spanish Air Force received its first C-295 on November 15, 2001, at Getafe's No. 35 Wing, declaring the aircraft operational in 2002. This successful introduction launched an unprecedented international sales campaign that would eventually encompass over 30 nations across six continents.
By December 2021, CASA had delivered 194 aircraft with an impressive backlog of 279 additional orders. The program achieved a milestone 300 total orders by March 2024, cementing the C-295's position as the world's leading tactical transport in its class.
The Indian Manufacturing Partnership
India's decision to procure 56 C-295W aircraft in September 2021 represented the largest single order and most significant technology transfer in the program's history. The $2.4 billion deal specified delivery of 16 aircraft from Spain by August 2025, while 40 additional aircraft would be manufactured in India by Tata Advanced Systems Limited.
The Indian Air Force received its first C-295 on September 13, 2023, beginning monthly deliveries from Seville. The Vadodara final assembly line, inaugurated on October 28, 2024, by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, marked a new chapter in international aerospace cooperation. The last Spanish-built aircraft was delivered on August 2, 2025, with the first Indian-manufactured C-295 scheduled to roll out in September 2026.
Technical Capabilities
The C-295's twin PW127G turboprops provide exceptional performance for a tactical transport, achieving a maximum speed of 358 mph and service ceiling of 25,000 feet. The high-wing configuration with rear cargo ramp enables rapid loading of vehicles, palletized cargo, or up to 71 fully equipped troops. For medical evacuation missions, the aircraft accommodates multiple stretchers with attending medical personnel.
Optional underwing stores stations allow for external fuel tanks or specialized equipment, while the reinforced landing gear enables operations from unpaved airstrips as short as 2,300 feet. Additional wing fuel capacity of 1,450 liters extends range for long-distance deployments.
Global Military Adoption
The aircraft's operational flexibility has attracted diverse operators from Algeria's desert operations to Finland's Arctic conditions. Major operators include Brazil, Canada, India, Poland, and the United Arab Emirates, each utilizing the C-295 for personnel transport, cargo delivery, and humanitarian missions.
The type's reliability in harsh environments has made it indispensable for nations requiring dependable airlift capability. From supporting overseas military deployments to disaster relief operations, the C-295 has proven its worth across the spectrum of military transport missions.
Manufacturing Legacy
CASA, founded as Construcciones Aeronáuticas SA, developed the C-295 as part of Spain's aerospace industry evolution. Now integrated into Airbus Military, the program represents successful European aerospace collaboration and technology transfer. The company's expertise in military transport design, demonstrated through the CN-235 and C-295 programs, established Spain as a major player in tactical airlift development.
Continuous production through 2026 and beyond ensures the C-295's role in military aviation will extend well into the 2040s, with ongoing deliveries to existing and new operators worldwide.
