Ronald Grosso conceived the Easy Eagle as a response to the growing demand for vintage-style aircraft that combined classical biplane aesthetics with contemporary performance and construction methods. Beginning development in 1996, Grosso aimed to create an aircraft that would appeal to recreational pilots seeking the romance of open-cockpit flying without the maintenance complexities of genuine vintage aircraft. The design philosophy centered on accessibility, with construction techniques suitable for amateur builders and operating costs manageable for private owners.
The Easy Eagle featured innovative hybrid construction that set it apart from purely traditional designs. The fuselage combined a fabric-covered steel tube framework with a metal-covered forward section, while the wings employed all-wooden construction with aluminum leading edges. This approach provided the structural integrity of modern materials while maintaining the classic appearance that enthusiasts demanded. The aircraft utilized a modified Clark Y airfoil and featured large ailerons mounted only on the lower wings, a configuration that provided adequate roll control while simplifying construction.
Production Evolution
Initial production began in 1998 with plans-built versions, requiring builders to invest between 300 to 500 hours of construction time. The original kit pricing structure positioned the Easy Eagle at $9,900, making it competitive within the experimental aircraft market. By mid-2003, only three Easy Eagles and one Easy Eagle II had achieved flight status, indicating the specialized nature of its market appeal.
Recognizing market demand for a two-seat variant, Grosso introduced the Easy Eagle II in 1999. This version accommodated engines ranging from 65 to 120 horsepower, with the Lycoming O-235 producing 112 horsepower becoming the preferred powerplant. The two-seat model required 500 to 700 construction hours and carried a price tag of $13,900, reflecting its increased complexity and larger engine requirements.
Manufacturing Partners and Distribution
The Easy Eagle's production history involved multiple manufacturing partnerships as ownership and distribution rights changed hands. Great Plains Aircraft Supply Company acquired production rights from Grosso, leveraging their experience with the Monnett Sonerai to market the Easy Eagle. The companies shared landing gear designs, creating manufacturing efficiencies and parts commonality that benefited builders.
Cottage Grove of Wisconsin later assumed marketing responsibilities, followed by Wicks Aircraft and Motorsports, which developed a comprehensive five-kit system for Easy Eagle construction. This evolution of manufacturing partnerships reflected the challenges faced by small aircraft manufacturers in maintaining consistent production and support for specialized recreational aircraft.
Engine and Performance Characteristics
The standard Easy Eagle utilized the Great Plains Type 1 Front Drive Volkswagen engine, a flat-four air-cooled powerplant producing 65 horsepower. This engine choice reflected the aircraft's positioning in the affordable recreational market, offering reliable performance with lower acquisition and operating costs compared to traditional aviation engines. The Volkswagen conversion provided adequate power for the aircraft's 800-pound loaded weight while maintaining fuel economy with its 12-gallon fuel capacity.
Performance specifications positioned the Easy Eagle as a capable recreational aircraft with a maximum speed of 100 mph and cruise speed of 95 mph. The aircraft demonstrated respectable climb performance at 700 feet per minute and achieved a service ceiling of 12,000 feet. Short-field performance proved impressive, with takeoff runs of 450 feet and landing distances of 400 feet, making the aircraft suitable for operations from smaller airfields popular with recreational pilots.
International Recognition and Legacy
The Easy Eagle achieved international recognition when it became the first of its type registered in Australia, receiving registration 19-7358 on December 22, 2009, under Recreational Aviation Australia regulations. This milestone demonstrated the aircraft's appeal beyond its American origins and validated its design for international recreational aviation markets.
The aircraft maintains the ICAO type designation EAEA in international aircraft registries, providing official recognition for insurance and regulatory purposes. While production numbers remained limited, the Easy Eagle successfully filled a niche in recreational aviation by offering builders and pilots access to classic biplane flying experiences with modern reliability and performance standards.
