A Replica That Never Took Flight Commercially
Despite demonstrations and availability as both a kit and completed aircraft, the E-Z Harvard failed to attract buyers beyond its prototype. The sole example, built in 2002, represented the final aircraft design from Blue Yonder Aviation before the company's apparent closure around 2016. This commercial failure contrasted sharply with the original Harvard trainer it mimicked, which saw production of over 20,000 units during World War II.
The Manufacturer's Story
Blue Yonder Aviation emerged from humble beginnings in 1986 when Wayne Winters established a flying school at Indus/Winters Aire Park, south of Calgary, Alberta. Operating from a converted pig barn on property originally purchased in 1914, Winters built his company around the Spectrum Beaver RX550 training aircraft. The small operation employed approximately three people by 2005.
Winters expanded beyond flight training into aircraft manufacturing, acquiring the rights to Merlin Aircraft designs in 1996 following that company's bankruptcy in December 1995. This acquisition represented the fourth iteration of the Merlin lineage, which had previously passed through Macair Industries of Baldwin, Ontario (1988-1991), Malcolm Aircraft of Michigan (1991-1992), and the original Merlin Aircraft of Michigan (1993-1996).
Design Philosophy and Engineering
Wayne Winters designed the E-Z Harvard in response to a customer request for an authentic-looking replica of the famous wartime trainer. Drawing from his earlier EZ King Cobra design, Winters created a scaled-down version that maintained the Harvard's distinctive round fuselage cross-section, glazed canopy, and characteristic tail fin while meeting ultralight weight restrictions.
The aircraft featured a cantilever wing adapted from the EZ King Cobra but extended by 4 feet to achieve a total wingspan of 31 feet and wing area of 176 square feet. Winters employed a Clark Y airfoil with Junkers-style ailerons, a leading-edge D-cell structure, and foam ribs for weight savings. The fuselage utilized welded 4130 steel tube construction, providing strength while maintaining the curved profile reminiscent of the original Harvard.
Engine and Performance
The prototype E-Z Harvard employed a Rotax 582 two-stroke engine producing 64 horsepower, driving a fixed-pitch propeller. This Austrian-manufactured powerplant was typical of ultralight aircraft in the 1980s through 2000s, offering a favorable power-to-weight ratio despite higher maintenance requirements compared to four-stroke alternatives. The large engine cowling could accommodate alternative Rotax engines including the 50-horsepower 503 or the 80-horsepower 912.
With its 64-horsepower Rotax installation, the E-Z Harvard achieved a maximum speed of 100 mph and cruised at 90 mph. The aircraft stalled at 40 mph and could reach a service ceiling of 12,000 feet. Range extended to 382 miles, providing adequate endurance for recreational flying. The power-to-weight ratio of 18.75 pounds per horsepower delivered respectable performance for an ultralight replica.
Limited Production Legacy
The E-Z Harvard represented one of several low-production aircraft from Blue Yonder Aviation. The company's history included the EZ Flyer (1991, 30 built), various Merlin variants (50 built after 1996), the EZ King Cobra (1998, 1 built), Twin Engine EZ Flyer (1999, 1 built), and EZ Fun Flyer (2011, 1 built). This pattern of single or limited production runs suggested a company focused more on custom design work than mass production.
The E-Z Harvard's commercial failure likely stemmed from limited market demand for Harvard replicas, competition from other ultralight designs, and the specialized nature of scale replica aircraft. While aviation enthusiasts appreciated authentic military trainer replicas, the practical flying community often preferred more conventional designs optimized for performance rather than historical accuracy.
Current Status
Blue Yonder Aviation's website went offline in late 2016, indicating the company's likely closure after three decades of operation. The sole E-Z Harvard prototype reportedly remained airworthy as of the last available records, representing the only example of this particular design. Unlike successful replica programs that achieved production runs in the hundreds, the E-Z Harvard stands as a reminder that even well-executed designs require market acceptance to survive commercially.
The aircraft's legacy lies primarily within aviation enthusiast circles as an example of Canadian homebuilt innovation and the challenges facing small aircraft manufacturers in niche markets. Its technical innovations, particularly the adaptation of existing wing designs to new fuselage configurations, demonstrated the engineering creativity possible in the experimental aircraft community.
