Jerry (Jerrie) K. Barnett began his gyroplane journey in 1962 as a self-taught designer working with Bensen kits. His goal was ambitious: create autogyros that surpassed existing designs with better range, performance, and safety features. After years of development starting with gliders and progressing to powered designs, Barnett achieved his breakthrough when the single-seat J4B first flew on July 15, 1968.
The J4B-2 emerged in 1975 as the natural evolution of Barnett's design philosophy. Where most contemporary autogyros featured open cockpits and basic construction, Barnett incorporated several innovations that set his aircraft apart. The enclosed fiberglass cockpit provided weather protection unprecedented in kit gyrocopters, while the welded 4130 chromoly steel tube airframe offered superior strength compared to bolted assemblies. The 23-foot aluminum rotor system and sprung four-wheel landing gear further distinguished the design from simpler competitors.
Manufacturing and Production
Barnett Rotorcraft Company, established by Jerry Barnett in 1962 in Olivehurst, California, manufactured and marketed the J4B-2 kits continuously from 1975 through the 2000s. The company maintained operations for over four decades, with kit sales documented as late as 2007. At least 222 kits from the combined J4B series were sold, though the exact number of completed and flying aircraft remains unknown due to the homebuilt nature of the program.
Documented serial numbers illustrate the production span: C-GNQM was completed in 1975, while later examples include C-FOQS (serial 265-2, completed 1993), C-FZAV (serial 311-2, completed 1999), and C-GHRF (serial 214-2, completed 2000). The kit required approximately 425 build hours and attracted builders seeking a more sophisticated alternative to basic autogyro designs.
Engine and Performance
The J4B-2 typically employed the proven Continental O-200 four-cylinder opposed engine, producing 100 horsepower. This powerplant, manufactured by Continental Motors from 1940 to 2012, represented one of aviation's most reliable designs with over 32,000 units produced during its 70-year production run. Some builders opted for higher-powered variants, including the 115-horsepower Lycoming O-235, with options available up to 150 horsepower.
This engine combination delivered impressive performance for a homebuilt gyrocopter. The J4B-2 achieved a maximum speed of 112 mph and cruise speeds between 93 and 110 mph. With fuel consumption of approximately 5 gallons per hour burning 80/87 octane fuel, the aircraft provided a range of 199 statute miles. The powered climb rate reached 500 feet per minute, with a service ceiling of 14,000 feet. Takeoff distance required just 300 feet, while the autorotating landing capability allowed touchdowns in as little as 20 feet.
Operational History
The J4B-2 served exclusively in civilian roles, operated by private individuals for personal transportation and training. The aircraft's capabilities were dramatically demonstrated in 1989 when pilot Howard (or Ron) Merkel established a United States coast-to-coast gyrocopter speed record flying a J4B-2.
International examples include G-BWCW, assembled on May 5, 1995, by Stephen Kirkby at Chandlers Ford, Hampshire, England. Though never flown, this aircraft later underwent restoration and is now preserved at The Helicopter Museum in Hampshire, representing one of the few known museum examples of the type.
Safety Record and Specifications
The J4B-2's operational record included at least four documented accidents between 1979 and 2009, resulting in one fatality. Notable incidents included the write-off of N694 on August 18, 1998, near Marysville, California, and the fatal crash of N3919C on July 28, 2001, at Titusville, Pennsylvania.
The aircraft's dimensions reflected its two-seat tandem configuration: overall length of 12 feet 4 inches, height of 7 feet 8 inches, and the characteristic 23-foot rotor diameter. Gross weight ranged from 880 to 1,000 pounds depending on configuration, with empty weights between 441 and 512 pounds. Fuel capacity varied from 12 to 15 US gallons.
Legacy
The Barnett J4B-2 significantly advanced homebuilt gyrocopter design by popularizing enclosed cockpits and sophisticated construction techniques among kit builders. Its 199 to 250-mile range capability transformed the autogyro from a local recreational aircraft into a practical cross-country machine. The design's influence extended beyond its production numbers, establishing performance benchmarks that subsequent gyrocopter manufacturers would strive to match. While exact numbers of airworthy examples remain unknown, the J4B-2's impact on experimental aviation continues through builders who chose enclosed, high-performance autogyros over simpler open-cockpit alternatives.
