The J.V. Martin K.III Kitten is a historically significant American experimental aircraft recognized as the first in the United States to feature in-flight retractable landing gear. Designed by James V. Martin as a high-altitude scout and fighter, this single-engine piston aircraft served as a prototype for early aerial interceptor concepts.

The J.V. Martin K.III Kitten was an experimental high-altitude fighter and scout prototype developed for the U.S. Army between 1917 and 1919. Designed by James V. Martin, the aircraft was intended to serve as a specialized interceptor. Its most groundbreaking technical achievement was the implementation of in-flight-operated retracting landing gear, making it the first aircraft in the United States to utilize this technology.

Designed in 1917, the K.III featured several innovative systems aimed at sustaining a pilot at extreme altitudes. These included the installation of oxygen tanks located behind the pilot's seat and provisions for electrically heated clothing. Structurally, the aircraft was characterized by its use of K-shaped interplane struts, which formed a distinct "K-strut" wing truss. The prototype was powered by a single 45 hp (34 kW) two-cylinder ABC Gnat piston engine.

Physical specifications of the K.III included a wingspan of 20 ft 2 in (6.15 m), a length of 13 ft 3 in (4.04 m), and a height of 7 ft 4 in (2.24 m). The aircraft had a wing area of 105 sq ft (9.8 m²) and an empty weight of 350 lb (159 kg). It carried a fuel capacity of 9 US gal (34 L) and was designed for a single crew member. While James V. Martin projected performance speeds of 135 mph at ground level, 112 mph at 10,000 ft, and 97 mph at 25,000 ft, the maximum speed is recorded as 117 kn (135 mph, 217 km/h).

Despite its innovations, the K.III never entered production. The aircraft remained unfinished by the conclusion of World War I, and subsequent evaluations at McCook Field in Dayton, Ohio, led officials to deem the aircraft structurally unsound. Although approximately 60 test flights were conducted during the summer of 1919, the U.S. Army ultimately refused to allow further flight operations and judged the design a failure as a practical aircraft. The sole prototype was later donated to the National Air and Space Museum in 1924, where it remains today as a testament to early American aeronautical experimentation.
