The KAI LAH-1 Miron is a recently developed light armed helicopter produced by Korea Aerospace Industries, Ltd. (KAI) in South Korea. Developed as a homegrown solution for the Republic of Korea Army, the LAH-1 represents the second domestic helicopter program in the nation's history, following the Surion. The aircraft was specifically designed to replace aging foreign-built fleets, namely the AH-1S Cobra and the MD 500 Defender.
Development of the program began in June 2015. To optimize development, production, and long-term sustainment costs, KAI utilized a design strategy that shared various parts and subsystems with the LCH (Light Civil Helicopter). This compact, twin-engine aircraft successfully conducted its first flight in 2019. The production phase reached a significant milestone on December 26, 2024, when the first two production units were delivered to the Republic of Korea Army. While these initial deliveries mark the start of the aircraft's operational life, the total number of units to be produced has not been publicly confirmed.
Technically, the LAH-1 Miron is powered by two engines, each delivering 1,032 shp. The aircraft is engineered for a maximum speed of 131 knots and has a listed weight of 10,846 lbs. In terms of operational roles, the LAH-1 is utilized for light attack and armed helicopter duties, including escort, close air support, and troop transport.
To fulfill its combat requirements, the LAH-1 Miron is equipped with a variety of armaments. KAI lists a 20 mm turret gun, air-to-ground missiles, and 70 mm (2.75-inch) rockets. Specifically, the aircraft is noted for its use of the Chun-gum air-to-ground missile. As a newly fielded aircraft, the LAH-1 Miron represents South Korea's strategic effort to maintain a domestic armed helicopter capability while reducing costs through parts commonality.
