Design Philosophy and Development
The RV-15 emerged from an ambitious design initiative that began in 2021, undergoing 29 iterations before reaching production status. Under the leadership of CEO Mikael Via and chief engineer Rian Johnson, Van's engineering team conducted 21 design iterations in 2024 alone, refining two wing designs, three flap configurations, five aileron variants, eight tail designs, and three rudder configurations. This extensive development process aimed to create what Van's termed their first "Total Performance" utility aircraft, combining low stall speeds with high cruise performance and exceptional short-field capabilities.
The aircraft's design objectives centered on achieving seemingly contradictory performance goals: docile handling characteristics with stall speeds below 45 knots at gross weight, while maintaining cruise speeds of 140 knots. The engineering team also prioritized short takeoff and landing performance under 400 feet, making the RV-15 suitable for backcountry airstrips that would challenge conventional aircraft.
Innovative Engineering Solutions
Van's developed several groundbreaking technologies specifically for the RV-15, sharing no components with their established low-wing RV series. The aircraft features patented articulated landing gear designed to handle rough airstrips while providing benign taildragger handling characteristics that would appeal to pilots transitioning from tricycle gear aircraft.
The flap system incorporates integrated vortex generators that remain hidden during cruise flight to minimize drag, then deploy with the flaps to provide high lift and high drag for steep approach angles. This innovation allows the aircraft to maintain efficient cruise performance while offering exceptional slow-flight capabilities for backcountry operations.
Builder-friendly construction became a cornerstone of the RV-15 design philosophy. Van's engineered the kit with pre-punched parts and blind rivet construction, eliminating the measuring and rigging requirements that can challenge amateur builders. This approach reflects lessons learned from over 11,493 completed RV aircraft that preceded the RV-15.
Corporate Recovery and Production Launch
The RV-15's development occurred during a challenging period for Van's Aircraft. The company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in December 2023, facing production issues and substantial backorders that threatened its survival. Under new management led by CEO Mikael Via, a former Glasair executive, the company emerged from bankruptcy in mid-2024 with renewed focus and financial stability.
Founder Richard "Dick" Van Grunsven, who established Van's Aircraft in 1972, stepped back from daily operations while providing personal loans to support the company's recovery. This transition allowed fresh leadership to guide the RV-15 from concept to production reality.
Production began with wing kits in July 2025, launching dramatically at EAA AirVenture when 20 kits sold within 30 minutes of orders opening on July 21, 2025. Van's established a systematic rollout schedule: tail kit orders beginning December 2025 with deliveries in March 2026, fuselage and firewall-forward kits ordered in August 2026 for October/December delivery, and finish kits ordered in November 2026 for year-end delivery.
Performance and Specifications
Powered by a Lycoming IO-390 engine producing between 175 and 220 horsepower, the RV-15 achieves a useful load exceeding 900 pounds while maintaining its impressive performance envelope. The high-wing configuration accommodates 60 gallons of total fuel capacity, with 30 gallons of usable fuel per wing tank.
The two-seat cabin provides space for pilot, passenger, and baggage, with large cargo doors facilitating equipment loading for backcountry adventures. This practical design reflects Van's recognition that backcountry flying often involves camping gear, survival equipment, and supplies that require easy access.
Market Position and Legacy Potential
Industry observers anticipate the RV-15 could become Van's most ordered aircraft, representing a strategic expansion into the utility and backcountry aviation market. This shift acknowledges growing interest in recreational backcountry flying and the limitations of low-wing aircraft in off-airport environments.
The prototype's presence at EAA AirVenture 2025 demonstrated Van's rapid development progress and commitment to their traditional experimental aircraft market. As Van's first high-wing design in over five decades of operation, the RV-15 signals the company's evolution while maintaining their reputation for performance-oriented kit aircraft.
With zero completed aircraft as of late 2025, the RV-15's ultimate impact remains to be determined. However, the immediate market response and Van's proven track record in the kit aircraft industry suggest the RV-15 will establish a significant presence in the backcountry aviation segment, potentially influencing other manufacturers to develop competing high-wing designs for the growing recreational off-airport flying community.
