Originally designated the TR-60 Silhouette, the design centered around readily available Rotax engines as a cost-effective solution for amateur builders seeking powered flight without the expense of certified aircraft.
The prototype N84TR took to the skies on July 3, 1984, marking the beginning of what would become a modest but geographically diverse production run. Task Research positioned the aircraft as an entry-level option for builders, emphasizing simplicity of construction and engine flexibility over performance or sophistication.
Engine Versatility and Technical Innovation
The Silhouette's most notable characteristic was its adaptability to various powerplants, reflecting the practical realities of kit aircraft construction where builders often selected engines based on availability and budget rather than optimal performance. The original prototype flew with a Rotax 447 producing 44 to 47 horsepower, which became the recommended standard for the Silhouette I variant.
Subsequent examples demonstrated remarkable engine diversity. One aircraft received a Mazda rotary engine in the second prototype, while another builder installed a 150-horsepower Lycoming O-320, representing more than triple the original engine's output. A South African example utilized a Volkswagen 2000 Type 4 automotive conversion, and at least one aircraft flew with a custom-converted Volkswagen 1834 producing 65 horsepower. This engine flexibility, while practical for builders, created significant performance variations across the fleet.
Global Production and Manufacturing
Despite its California origins, the Silhouette achieved an unusually international production footprint for such a limited aircraft. Task Research sold plans to builders across four countries, with completed aircraft emerging from locations as diverse as Cape Canaveral, Florida, where Capetown Builders Inc. constructed examples, and international sites in Norway, South Africa, and Zambia.
This geographic distribution reflected both the aircraft's appeal as an affordable option in markets with limited aviation infrastructure and the entrepreneurial spirit of homebuilders worldwide. Ownership Transfer and Continued Development
Task Research's departure from aviation in 1989 marked a critical transition for the Silhouette program. Marketing rights transferred to Lunds Tekniske, operated by Arne Lund in Norway, where the design continued availability until at least 1998. However, Norwegian production proved minimal, with very few additional aircraft completed during this nine-year period.
The design's flexibility extended beyond engines to landing gear configuration, with builders choosing between the standard fixed tricycle arrangement or an optional tailwheel setup. Detachable wing tip extensions provided another customization option, allowing builders to modify wing loading and performance characteristics.
Production Legacy and Preservation
The Silhouette's production run from 1984 to 1998 yielded approximately 12 to 15 completed aircraft from more than 40 plans sold, representing a completion rate typical of amateur-built aircraft projects. This modest output placed the type among the smaller homebuilt programs, though its international reach distinguished it from purely domestic designs.
The original TR-60 prototype found permanent preservation at the Museum of Flight in Seattle, Washington, though it remains in storage rather than public display. This preservation ensures that future aviation historians will have access to the original airframe that launched the Silhouette program on that July day in 1984.
Derivative Aircraft and Influence
The Silhouette's design philosophy influenced at least one derivative aircraft, the Harrison Skyblazer, demonstrating that Task Research's engineering approach possessed sufficient merit to inspire further development. While the Skyblazer itself achieved limited success, its existence validated the original Silhouette concept of affordable, adaptable homebuilt aviation.
Current Status and Assessment
The distributed nature of kit aircraft construction makes current airworthiness status difficult to assess, though the Silhouette's composite construction and relatively recent vintage suggest that several examples likely remain in private hands.
