The Supermarine Swift was Britain's first swept-wing fighter aircraft, developed as an emergency backup to the troubled Hawker Hunter program during the early Cold War. First flown in 1951, it was a single-seat, single-engine jet fighter powered by a Rolls-Royce Avon turbojet engine. Despite incorporating advanced features like titanium construction and becoming the first fighter armed with air-to-air guided missiles, fewer than 200 Swifts were built between 1952 and 1956. Service History

The Swift entered RAF service on February 13, 1954, with No. 56 Squadron at RAF Waterbeach in Cambridgeshire, marking a historic milestone as the first swept-wing aircraft to serve with the Royal Air Force. However, this achievement quickly turned into disappointment. Within six months, both the F.1 and F.2 variants were grounded following a series of accidents and performance failures. The F.1 was withdrawn from service in August 1954, with the F.2 following shortly after. Operational Challenges

The aircraft suffered from severe pitch-up problems, afterburner failures at high altitude, and poor handling characteristics that made it unsuitable for its intended interceptor role. By 1958, all operational Swift variants had been retired from RAF service without seeing combat.

Variants and Development

Supermarine produced seven distinct Swift variants in an attempt to resolve the aircraft's fundamental problems. The F.1, with 20 built and only nine entering service, was armed with two 30mm Aden cannon mounted under the engine intakes. The F.2 increased firepower to four 30mm Aden cannon but shared the same aerodynamic flaws. The F.3 and F.4 incorporated various modifications, with the F.4 featuring an adjustable-incidence tailplane to address pitch-up issues, though only eight F.4s were completed.

The FR.5 fighter-reconnaissance variant proved most successful, with 102 aircraft built including 39 originally ordered as F.4s but completed to the reconnaissance standard. The first four FR.5s were delivered in December 1955. The final F.7 variant achieved historical significance as the world's first fighter aircraft armed with air-to-air guided missiles, carrying two Fairey Fireflash missiles. However, only 14 F.7s were built for weapons trials, and none entered squadron service.

The aircraft featured all-swept flight surfaces with full-span leading-edge flaps and an all-moving tailplane. The Rolls-Royce Avon 108 turbojet engine produced 33.4 kN (15,436 pounds) of thrust in the F.1 variant, though engine reliability remained problematic throughout the aircraft's service life.

Production Legacy

Total Swift production reached approximately 197 aircraft across all variants between 1952 and 1956. The program suffered from the decision to begin production before completing test flight modifications, with the first production-standard F.1 flying on August 25, 1952. This premature commitment to manufacturing contributed to the aircraft's problems and increased program costs. The Swift represented a cautionary tale in aircraft development, demonstrating the risks of rushing advanced technology into production without adequate testing.

Current Status

No Supermarine Swifts remain airworthy today, though several examples survive in museums as static displays.
