First Flight and Testing
On August 5, 1973, Canadair test pilot Paul A. Hartman took the controls of the first TR-1 prototype, accompanied by engineer Chuck Herbst, for the aircraft's maiden flight. The selection of Hartman, an experienced test pilot from Canada's most established aircraft manufacturer, demonstrated the serious intent behind the Trigull program and provided credibility to the fledgling company's ambitious project.
The flight test program continued through the mid-1970s, with demonstrations conducted at Abbotsford airport by pilot Norm Ronaasen. These public demonstrations were crucial for generating interest among potential customers and investors, showcasing the aircraft's amphibious capabilities to the general aviation community.
Manufacturing and Production Challenges
Triden Aircraft Ltd. contracted Canadian Aircraft Products (CAP) of Richmond, British Columbia, to handle the actual construction of the prototypes. This arrangement allowed the smaller company to leverage established manufacturing capabilities while maintaining design control over their aircraft. Between 1973 and 1976, CAP completed all three TR-1 prototypes under this arrangement.
Despite the technical success of the prototypes and the backing of experienced industry partners, Trident Aircraft faced insurmountable financial challenges. The specialized amphibian market proved too limited to support the investment required for full-scale production. The company struggled through the late 1970s before finally closing its doors in 1980, marking the end of the TR-1's original development phase.
Technical Configuration
The TR-1 Trigull featured a conventional amphibian layout optimized for four-seat general aviation use. The single piston engine configuration provided adequate performance while keeping operating costs manageable for private owners. In 2006, Viking Air Ltd., a Canadian company specializing in maintaining and updating classic aircraft designs, acquired the complete type certificate for the Trigull along with all three surviving prototypes.
Viking Air initially showed considerable interest in reviving the design as a modern turbine-powered amphibian, recognizing the continued demand for small seaplanes in Canada's vast wilderness regions. However, market analysis ultimately led them to focus their resources on other proven designs in their portfolio, including the famous de Havilland Beaver and Otter series.
As of February 2023, Viking Air (now operating under the De Havilland Aircraft of Canada name following a 2022 corporate rebranding) maintains ownership of two of the three original prototypes. This preservation ensures that these unique aircraft survive as examples of Canadian aviation innovation during the 1970s.
Market Impact and Assessment
While the TR-1 Trigull never achieved commercial success, it represented an important attempt to modernize the amphibious aircraft market during a period when few manufacturers were investing in this specialized segment. The aircraft's failure stemmed not from technical inadequacy but from the fundamental challenge of serving the limited amphibian market with the economics of modern aircraft development.
