ATA Airlines was a major American low-cost carrier that operated from 1973 until its bankruptcy and cessation of operations in 2008. Headquartered in Indianapolis, Indiana, ATA pioneered low-cost air travel in the United States and operated extensive domestic routes, with particular strength in service to leisure destinations and focus on underserved markets. The airline offered a single-cabin economy configuration on most of its fleet and operated its primary hub at Indianapolis International Airport, while also maintaining significant operations at other U.S. cities. ATA was notable for its independent business model, remaining unaffiliated with any of the major airline alliances throughout its history. The carrier operated both scheduled passenger service and large-scale military charter operations, with military contracts becoming an increasingly important part of its business model in its later years. ATA's closure in 2008 was precipitated by the global financial crisis and rising fuel costs, which the airline's cost structure could not adequately absorb.
