The Sonerai, a pioneering homebuilt racing aircraft that democratized high-performance amateur construction, became an icon of the Formula V racing class and affordable sport aviation. First flown on July 20, 1971, it was a single-seat, mid-wing monoplane powered by modified Volkswagen automotive engines producing 50-100 horsepower. With its compact 16-foot 8-inch wingspan and length, the original Sonerai I could cruise at 150 mph while maintaining construction costs accessible to amateur builders. The aircraft was designed by John Monnett and initially produced by Monnett Experimental Aircraft.
