Germanwings was a low-cost carrier headquartered in Cologne, Germany, that operated as a subsidiary of Lufthansa from 2002 until its dissolution in 2016. The airline focused on point-to-point service across Europe, primarily operating short- and medium-haul flights from bases in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. Germanwings offered a single economy cabin with a no-frills business model, generating revenue through ancillary services such as seat selection and baggage fees. The airline maintained a frequent flyer program through Lufthansa's existing Miles & More scheme. In March 2015, Germanwings flight 9525 crashed in the French Alps, resulting in significant operational and reputational challenges; the airline subsequently ceased operations and was absorbed back into Lufthansa's corporate structure in 2016.
