Spanair was a Spanish airline founded in 1986 and headquartered in Barcelona that operated as a full-service carrier serving Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East until its bankruptcy and cessation of operations in 2012. The airline operated both scheduled passenger services and charter flights, with Madrid-Barajas and Barcelona-El Prat serving as primary hubs, and was a member of the SkyTeam alliance from 2005 onwards. Spanair offered economy and business class cabins on its routes and maintained a frequent flyer program called Spanair Plus. The airline was majority-owned by SAS (Scandinavian Airlines System) for much of its operational history, which provided significant financial and operational support, though this partnership ultimately could not sustain the carrier through the global financial crisis. At its peak, Spanair was one of Spain's major carriers, serving a substantial European network and carrying millions of passengers annually before financial difficulties forced the airline to cease all operations in 2012.
