The McDonnell Douglas MD-88 was the final evolution of the successful DC-9 family, representing the culmination of nearly three decades of short-haul airliner development. First flown on August 15, 1987, it was a twin-engine, rear-mounted turbofan aircraft configured to carry 149-160 passengers in a single-class layout. With a wingspan of 107 feet 8 inches and maximum range of 2,550 nautical miles, the MD-88 became the backbone of domestic operations for major carriers. McDonnell Douglas manufactured exactly 1,171 examples between 1987 and 1994 at their Long Beach, California facility.
