The McDonnell Douglas MD-11, a wide-body trijet designed to replace the troubled DC-10, represented one of aviation's most ambitious yet commercially disappointing aircraft programs. First flown on January 10, 1990, it was a long-range, low-wing trijet capable of seating up to 410 passengers or carrying substantial cargo loads. Measuring over 200 feet in length with a wingspan of 169 feet, the MD-11 featured advanced two-crew glass cockpit technology that eliminated the flight engineer position. Despite technological innovations, only 200 aircraft were manufactured by McDonnell Douglas between 1988 and 2000.
