Mexicana de Aviación was Mexico's flag carrier and one of the oldest airlines in the Americas, having been founded in 1921 and headquartered in Mexico City. The airline operated extensive domestic and international passenger services, with major hubs in Mexico City and Cancún, serving routes throughout North America, Central America, and the Caribbean, as well as transatlantic flights to Europe. As a full-service legacy carrier, Mexicana offered multiple cabin classes including first, business, and economy seating, and operated a frequent flyer program called Frecuencia Mexicana. The airline ceased operations in 2010 after facing severe financial difficulties exacerbated by fuel price volatility, economic downturns, and increased competition from low-cost carriers. Despite its long history and significant role in Mexican aviation, Mexicana was unable to sustain operations and ultimately filed for bankruptcy, leaving a notable gap in Mexico's international air transport network.
