The Nanchang CJ-6, China's first indigenously designed and manufactured aircraft, revolutionized pilot training for the People's Liberation Army Air Force following its maiden flight on August 27, 1958. This two-seat basic trainer featured a low-wing monoplane configuration with tricycle landing gear and a 260-horsepower radial engine. Stretching over 64 feet in wingspan, the CJ-6 represented a significant leap forward from Soviet-licensed designs. The aircraft was manufactured by the Nanchang Aircraft Factory, later known as Hongdu Aviation Industry Group.
