The Mil Mi-2, the first Soviet-designed helicopter built entirely outside the USSR, represented a significant advancement in light utility rotorcraft technology. First flown on September 22, 1961, it was a single-rotor twin-turboshaft helicopter that could carry up to 10 passengers or equivalent cargo loads. With its distinctive side-by-side engine configuration mounted above the cabin, the Mi-2 delivered 40 percent more power than its piston-engine predecessor while weighing half as much. Designed by Mikhail Mil's bureau in Moscow but produced exclusively by WSK PZL-Świdnik in Poland from 1965 to 1999, it became one of the most successful light helicopters of the Cold War era.
