The Yakovlev Yak-40 was the Soviet Union's first jet-powered regional airliner and became the backbone of domestic air transport across the USSR. First flown on October 21, 1966, it was a distinctive tri-jet design with three rear-mounted engines capable of carrying passengers on short-haul routes. With a maximum speed of 537 mph and service ceiling of 26,247 feet, the aircraft measured over 64 feet in length. The Yak-40 was manufactured by Yakovlev OKB at the Saratov Aviation Plant.
