AAIB Probes British Airways A320 ADR Failure, Stall Warnings Near Heathrow
A British Airways Airbus A320 operating flight BA919 from Düsseldorf to London Heathrow narrowly avoided a serious incident July 6 after a critical failure of its Air Data Reference (ADR) system. The failure occurred during the aircraft's approach over east London at an altitude between 3,000 and 4,000 feet, triggering repeated stall warnings and a subsequent loss of control in flight.
According to the Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB), the flight crew initially abandoned the approach and declared a "PAN PAN" emergency to work through system checklists in a holding pattern. During a second approach at approximately 3,000 feet, a second stall warning prompted the crew to execute what the AAIB described as a "potentially abrupt recovery manoeuvre" and upgrade their emergency status to a "MAYDAY" call. The aircraft landed safely at Heathrow with no reported injuries or damage.
While some media outlets characterized the event as a "pilot blunder" that left the jet "seconds from disaster," the AAIB has explicitly stated it has not concluded that pilot error caused the incident. British Airways said it is assisting the AAIB with the investigation and is unable to comment further. The investigation remains focused on the technical cause of the ADR failure and the interaction between the aircraft's automation and manual pilot inputs.
