ATC Prevents Mid-Air Conflict Between Delta, SkyWest Flights at LAX
Two aircraft narrowly avoided a mid-air conflict over the Pacific Ocean shortly after departing Los Angeles International Airport when a Delta Air Lines flight deviated from its assigned routing. According to air traffic control audio and ADS-B flight tracking data analyzed by aviation analyst CaptainSteeeve, Delta Flight 958 drifted left of its instrument departure course, placing it on a converging path with SkyWest Airlines Flight 231E.
Recognizing the developing loss of separation, controllers issued urgent instructions to both crews. SkyWest 231E was ordered to turn southbound immediately to heading 180, while Delta 958 was directed to turn right to regain its course. In subsequent radio exchanges, the Delta crew acknowledged they were "a little bit left of course" and had misinterpreted a heading assignment.
The incident highlights the critical role of "defense-in-depth" safety layers, where rapid controller intervention and crew compliance prevent navigational errors from escalating into accidents. The event occurs amid broader discussions regarding the complexity of parallel-runway departures at LAX and the risks associated with automation mode errors. Neither Delta Air Lines, SkyWest Airlines, nor the Federal Aviation Administration has issued a formal public statement regarding the incident.
