B-52 Stratofortress Crashes After Takeoff at Edwards AFB, 8 Feared Dead
A U.S. Air Force B-52 Stratofortress bomber crashed shortly after takeoff from Edwards Air Force Base, California, on Monday, June 15, 2026. The aircraft was conducting a routine test mission when it went down at approximately 11:20 a.m. PDT, according to a statement from the 412th Test Wing Public Affairs.
All eight people on board are feared dead. The Air Force said initial indications suggest the crash was "not survivable," and local outlets KTLA and CBS News reported that all eight crew members are believed to have been killed. Emergency personnel responded immediately to the crash site — located on base property — to conduct firefighting and rescue operations. A press conference was scheduled for 4:15 p.m. PDT the same day to provide further updates. The cause of the accident is under investigation.
Edwards Air Force Base serves as the U.S. Air Force's premier flight test center. Test missions routinely carry larger crews than standard operational sorties to accommodate test engineers and observers, accounting for the elevated headcount aboard the aircraft. The B-52 fleet, which dates to the 1950s, is currently undergoing modernization efforts intended to extend its service life into the 2050s.
