Certification Milestone

Bell Helicopter announced its 525 Super-Medium helicopter has entered final certification stages with the Federal Aviation Administration. The company says all required flight testing is complete, with only regression tests remaining in the systems integration lab in Arlington, Texas. Senior leadership indicated the team has never been closer to achieving type certification despite a development timeline spanning 15 years.

Timeline and Specifications

The aircraft, which first flew in 2015, features fly-by-wire controls and is powered by twin GE Aerospace CT7 engines. While Bell targets 2026 certification, the company hasn't committed to a firm date following previous schedule delays. The platform is designed to replace the Sikorsky S-92 in offshore oil and gas operations while offering super-medium efficiency.

Market and Regulatory Outlook

European Union Aviation Safety Agency validation is expected to take at least 12 months after FAA certification, potentially delaying deliveries for primary customer Equinor until 2028. Bell has declined to release production numbers but reports strong customer interest awaiting type certification. Post-certification evaluation programs are already scheduled with Omni Helicopters International in Guyana.
