Shanghai-based China Eastern Airlines has formally announced an agreement to acquire 101 new aircraft from Airbus. Filed with the Shanghai Stock Exchange on March 25, 2026, the deal encompasses A320neo, A321neo, and A321XLR models with a list price value of $15.8 billion, subject to significant discounts.

Fleet Renewal and Strategic Significance

This procurement prioritizes fleet renewal, replacing at least 53 older A320 aircraft retiring due to age or lease expirations. Deliveries are scheduled in batches between 2028 and 2032, aiming to enhance short- and medium-haul capacity while reducing fuel consumption and operating costs per seat. The order marks the first commitment for the A321XLR model among China's three major state-owned airlines, enabling longer narrowbody routes.

Market Context and Approval Process

The order reinforces Airbus' dominance in the Chinese narrowbody market over Boeing, with Chinese carriers receiving more than 90% narrowbodies from Airbus in 2025 deliveries. While the agreement represents a $15.8 billion commitment at list prices, the deal remains subject to final approval by shareholders and state authorities before becoming fully binding.
