Delta Air Lines Flight 104, an Airbus A330-323 registered as N813NW, returned safely to São Paulo/Guarulhos International Airport on March 29 following an engine fire during climb-out. The flight, bound for Atlanta with 272 passengers and 14 crew members, experienced a mechanical failure in the left Pratt & Whitney PW4000 engine shortly after takeoff. Video footage captured sparks and flames trailing from the port engine for more than a minute before pilots initiated a return procedure.

Investigation Underway

No injuries were reported among the 286 people on board, though the incident caused 28 flight cancellations and 14 diversions at the major hub. Delta Air Lines confirmed the aircraft experienced a mechanical issue, prioritizing safety while reaccommodating passengers. Regulatory bodies, including Brazil's CENIPA and the U.S. FAA, have launched investigations into the uncontained engine event.

Pratt & Whitney stated it is actively supporting the investigation into the failure mode. While rare for Delta's A330 fleet, historical data suggests such events require rigorous review to ensure airworthiness. The airline has not specified a timeline for N813NW's return to service.
