FAA Extends Flight Caps at Newark Airport Through Late 2025
The Federal Aviation Administration has implemented a final order limiting flight arrivals and departures at Newark Liberty International Airport through late 2025 to address chronic congestion issues. Hourly operations are capped at 24 during specific construction windows and 34 otherwise until Oct. 25, 2025.
These regulatory measures target persistent bottlenecks caused by runway construction, air traffic control staffing shortages and equipment issues that strain capacity across the terminal area. Systemic challenges within the National Airspace System amplify local delays, forcing ground delay programs to throttle inbound flights during weather events or operational disruptions.
Acting Administrator Chris Rocheleau said the agency aims to relieve substantial public inconvenience caused by excessive delays and staffing challenges. While major carriers have adjusted schedules by removing daily round trips, capacity limits are projected to remain through late 2026 as technical upgrades proceed. The FAA continues monitoring airspace conditions to balance operational efficiency with safety requirements at the region's busiest airports.
