Former Air Canada Captain Charged After Flying 900 Flights Without ATP
Project Icarus Uncovers Licensing Fraud
Geoffrey Wall, 59, of Barrie, Ontario, has been charged with multiple counts of fraud and forgery following a law enforcement investigation dubbed "Project Icarus." According to Peel Regional Police and CBC News, Wall allegedly operated more than 900 domestic and international flights as a captain for Air Canada between 2009 and 2025 without ever obtaining the legally required Airline Transport Pilot License (ATPL).
Wall, who joined the airline in 1998 and was promoted to captain in 2009, is accused of using forged documents to misrepresent his qualifications to both Air Canada and Transport Canada. Police reports indicate Wall earned nearly CA$3 million in salary during his tenure in the left seat, transporting tens of thousands of passengers on widebody aircraft, including the Boeing 767, 777 and 787.
Regulatory Oversight and Safety Impact
Transport Canada identified irregularities in Wall's credentials in early 2025, prompting the criminal investigation. Wall now faces charges of fraud over CA$5,000, uttering forged documents, possession of forged documents and public mischief — the latter stemming from an alleged false police report claiming his documents had been stolen.
Air Canada stated that Wall was removed from duty immediately upon discovery of the irregularities. The airline maintains that safety was not compromised, noting that Wall successfully passed all recurrent simulator checks and annual proficiency evaluations. Aviation experts interviewed by CBC suggest the case highlights a systemic vulnerability in how regulators and airlines verify original licensing documents over extended careers.
