NTSB Classifies United 767 Newark Light Pole Strike as Accident
The National Transportation Safety Board has officially classified the incident involving United Airlines Flight 169 as an accident. The Boeing 767, arriving from Venice, Italy, clipped a light pole on final approach to Newark Liberty International Airport, according to Fox 5 NY and CBS News New York.
During the approach, the aircraft flew unusually low over the New Jersey Turnpike, striking a light pole that subsequently fell onto a Jeep on the roadway. Debris from the aircraft, including a landing gear tire, also struck a delivery truck. The truck driver sustained minor injuries and was released, while the 221 passengers and 10 crew members aboard were uninjured.
Investigation Status
Both the NTSB and Federal Aviation Administration are conducting investigations into the event. United Airlines has reportedly removed the flight crew from service pending the outcome of the inquiry. A preliminary report from the NTSB is expected within 30 days to determine the cause of the low-altitude approach and resulting strike.
