Newark, N.J. — The National Transportation Safety Board announced Monday it is investigating a close call between an Alaska Airlines Boeing 737 and a FedEx Boeing 777 at Newark Liberty International Airport.

The incident occurred March 17 during evening operations when air traffic control instructed one aircraft to execute a go-around to maintain safe separation on intersecting runways. According to Flightradar24 data and NTSB statements, Alaska Airlines Flight 294 passed over FedEx Flight 721 at approximately 300 feet. The FAA confirmed the Alaska crew was cleared for landing before being instructed to climb out due to sequencing concerns involving the cargo jet on a parallel approach.

No injuries or damage were reported by either carrier. Company representatives cited standard go-around training protocols and deferred further comments to federal investigators. The NTSB is examining air traffic control sequencing procedures amid ongoing reports of staffing challenges at the busy New Jersey hub.
