NTSB Probes Fatal Cessna 182T Crash in California Mountains
Two people died May 7, 2026, when a Cessna 182T Skylane crashed into rising terrain during a low-level mountain flight near Inyokern, California. The aircraft, registration N227TF, was conducting a Part 91 instructional flight that departed Inyokern Airport at approximately 10:47 a.m. local time.
According to the NTSB preliminary report, ADS-B data shows the aircraft traveled southwest toward the El Paso Mountains for about seven minutes before turning to fly up a steep, narrow canyon. The final recorded data point placed the aircraft at 3,425 feet mean sea level, roughly one-half mile northwest of the impact site. The wreckage was found on a canyon wall at approximately 3,771 feet elevation.
Investigators have recovered the wreckage to a secure facility for examination. The NTSB said all major components were accounted for and no evidence of pre-impact mechanical failure has been identified. Independent aviation analyst Juan Browne noted the flight profile is consistent with controlled flight into terrain during low-level maneuvering in a confined area. The NTSB has not determined a probable cause.
