NTSB Report: Delta, American Jets Came Within 670 Feet at Boston Logan

A preliminary National Transportation Safety Board report has revealed new details about a serious runway incursion involving Delta Air Lines Flight 2351 and American Airlines Flight 3161 at Boston Logan International Airport on June 20, 2026. The two aircraft came within approximately 670 feet of each other vertically at their closest point — a figure that refines earlier estimates of roughly 300 feet.

Sequence of Events

Delta Flight 2351, an Airbus A319 arriving from Dallas/Fort Worth, had been cleared to land on Runway 33L when American Flight 3161, a Boeing 737-800 departing for Charlotte, was simultaneously cleared for takeoff on the intersecting Runway 27. As the American jet began its takeoff roll, the Delta crew spotted the conflict and initiated a self-directed go-around from between 100 and 200 feet above the runway — approximately 20 seconds before air traffic control issued the same instruction.

Investigation Continues

The NTSB is also examining a reported false-start takeoff by the American Airlines crew and discrepancies in runway lighting indications. No injuries or aircraft damage were reported; Delta 2351 landed safely on a subsequent approach and American 3161 continued to its destination. The FAA and NTSB are investigating how both aircraft received simultaneous clearances onto intersecting runways.
