Shannon Airport Fredericksburg Plane Crash Kills Pilot, 78

A fatal general aviation accident Tuesday morning killed a Spotsylvania County-area pilot after his single-engine experimental aircraft went down in a dealership parking lot near Shannon Airport (KEZF) in Fredericksburg, Virginia. The crash occurred at approximately 11:05 a.m. local time July 14, 2026.

The Virginia State Police and the FAA identified the aircraft as a Montana Coyote — a light, amateur-built kitplane commonly used for recreational flight. The sole occupant, Rowland A. Babcock Jr., 78, of Ruther Glen, Virginia, was pronounced dead at the scene. The aircraft came down in the parking lot of Greenline Service Corporation, a John Deere dealership on Tidewater Trail, but did not strike the main building. No employees or customers were injured.

Investigation Underway

The National Transportation Safety Board is leading the investigation with assistance from the FAA and state police. Officials listed the cause as "unknown circumstances," and no preliminary determination has been made. The NTSB is seeking witnesses who may have photos or video of the accident to assist in the probe. Investigators typically examine maintenance records, weather conditions, and flight data during the initial phase of a general aviation accident inquiry.
