TSA Warns Small Airports Could Close as DHS Shutdown Continues
The Transportation Security Administration has warned that small airports face potential closures as a prolonged partial Department of Homeland Security shutdown continues into 2026. The shutdown, which began Feb. 14, has resulted in TSA staffing shortages due to unpaid officers.
Regional Airports Most Vulnerable
While major airports experience long security lines, small and regional facilities face the greatest risk of closure. TSA officers received partial pay at the end of February but are missing full paychecks by mid-March, increasing absenteeism similar to previous shutdowns in 2018-19 and 2025. Major hubs remain prioritized for staffing as TSA shifts officers to busy checkpoints and encourages overtime, but small airports are particularly vulnerable due to lean teams and limited reassignment options.
Service Disruptions Mount
TSA curtailed services like Global Entry in February before restarting them in March to manage resources. Travel advisories now urge passengers to arrive early and monitor operations at regional airports. Experts warn that a prolonged shutdown into spring or summer could intensify disruptions when combined with seasonal storms and existing air traffic control staffing issues.
