US Airlines Hike Bag Fees Amid Rising Costs

Major U.S. carriers are implementing across-the-board increases to checked bag fees, signaling continued pressure from operational costs and fuel prices. JetBlue led recent announcements with a $4 hike for off-peak first bags, moving prepaid rates from $35 to $39 and airport rates from $45 to $49. Peak season surcharges increased by $9, bringing prepaid fees to $49 and airport rates to $59.

Industry-Wide Fare Structure Changes

United Airlines announced plans to introduce basic premium fares alongside new "Relax Row" seats, aiming to diversify its fare products. Other carriers are making concurrent adjustments: Air France/KLM raised surcharges on award tickets, American Airlines reversed a previous decision regarding seatback screens, and Delta modified rules surrounding its 20-minute baggage guarantee.

The fee adjustments occur amid reports of jet fuel shortages in Asia and Europe, compounding airline operational challenges. Industry analysts note carriers are waiting for fuel prices to stabilize before potentially reversing course on pricing structures, as airlines balance cost recovery with competitive positioning in the post-pandemic market.
