The restoration of a rare Vought F4U-1 "Birdcage" Corsair is advancing through critical engine and intake integration at Vultures Row Aviation in Cameron. A recent technical update from the Vultures Row Birdcage Corsair project detailed the complex operation of the aircraft's Pratt & Whitney R-2800 three-stage supercharger and air-induction systems.

Technical Integration of the R-2800

According to project documentation, the restoration team is currently validating the roles of the blower, intercooler and oil cooler to ensure optimal cooling and boost performance. The system is designed for specific operational altitudes: the main-stage door operates during takeoff, with the low blower engaging above 8,000 feet and the high blower activating above 13,000 feet to maintain manifold pressure.

This phase represents a significant engineering milestone, as the team focuses on precise routing of cooling air and carburetion tuning. The Birdcage variant is extremely rare, and the project aims to return the airframe to full flying condition. The current systems validation work is essential for future ground testing and eventual flight preparation.
