KHANDYGA, Russia — An Antonov An-2R operated by MiAn Airlines was destroyed following an engine failure shortly after takeoff from Khandyga–Teply Klyuch Airport on Tuesday, May 19, 2026. All eight occupants survived the crash landing, though the pilot sustained serious injuries.

According to the Aviation Safety Network, the accident occurred approximately four kilometers from Teply Klyuch in the Tomponsky District of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia). The aircraft (registration RA-40440) was in the initial climb phase when the engine failed, leading to a crash landing and subsequent fire that destroyed the aircraft. Seven passengers sustained minor injuries.

Investigation and Context

Russian aviation authorities have opened an investigation into the incident. The aircraft, a PZL-Mielec built variant likely several decades old, was engaged in local operations when the accident occurred.

The Antonov An-2 remains a workhorse of Russian regional aviation despite its age. Engine failure during takeoff has been identified as a recurring risk factor for the type in remote operations, with over 800 hull losses recorded globally for the An-2 family.

The Federal Air Transport Agency of Russia (Rosaviatsiya) is leading the investigation into the probable cause of the engine failure.
