Hong Kong International Airport's rebuilt Terminal 2 departure hall will open to passengers on May 27, 2026, marking a significant milestone in the airport's post-pandemic capacity expansion. The new facility features advanced smart check-in technology and automated processing designed to handle substantially increased passenger volumes.

Airport Authority Hong Kong confirmed the opening date during a February Lunar New Year event. The rebuilt T2 represents a complete transformation from its previous role as a check-in annex, now functioning as a full-service terminal connected to both the Airport Express station and Terminal 1. The facility features more than 50 automated bag-drop counters and re-engineered security screening capable of processing around 3,000 passengers per hour. Passengers will experience a biometric journey using facial recognition as their boarding pass at multiple touchpoints.

The terminal reopening is a cornerstone of HKIA's HK$141 billion Three-Runway System project, representing the first major capacity boost since the pandemic. Approximately 15 regional airlines will migrate to the new departure hall in phases, with the complete 3RS targeting a design capacity of 120 million passengers annually by 2035. AAHK Chairman Fred Lam described the reopening as crucial for restoring Hong Kong's aviation hub status, while Transport Secretary Mabel Chan emphasized its role in the Greater Bay Area integration strategy.
