Lufthansa-ITA Airways Deal Accelerates with Rome Hub Strategy
The Lufthansa-ITA Airways deal has entered an accelerated phase, with ITA Airways CEO Jörg Eberhart confirming that the carrier is being rapidly integrated into the Lufthansa Group's multi-hub network and Star Alliance ecosystem. Following Lufthansa's decision in May 2026 to exercise its option to increase its stake in ITA to 90%, the airline is being positioned as the "Italian pillar" of the group, with Rome Fiumicino serving as a primary intercontinental gateway.
Network Expansion and Alliance Shift
Eberhart stated that integration is moving at record pace, particularly regarding the transition from SkyTeam to Star Alliance. A critical component of ITA's network strategy is joining the A++ transatlantic joint venture with United Airlines and Air Canada, pending U.S. regulatory approval. This move would allow ITA to optimize schedules and revenue sharing on key routes to New York, Boston, Miami and Los Angeles.
Fleet Strategy and Brand Identity
To support this growth, ITA is focusing on a modern, fuel-efficient fleet, utilizing the Airbus A320 family for short-haul efficiency and the Airbus A350-900 for intercontinental connectivity. While the airline will align its commercial systems and loyalty programs—merging the Volare program into Miles & More—Eberhart emphasized that ITA will maintain its distinct "Italian flair" in cabin design and service, mirroring the national identity models of Swiss and Austrian Airlines. Lufthansa is expected to have full operational control by 2027, with an option to acquire the remaining 10% stake from the Italian state by 2033.
