Major U.S. Airlines Hike Checked Bag Fees Up to $10 Amid Rising Fuel Costs
Four of the six largest U.S. carriers announced increases to checked baggage fees in early April 2026, citing rising jet fuel costs as the primary driver. United Airlines became the second major carrier to implement the hike this week, joining JetBlue, which raised prices March 30. The increases reflect an industry-wide effort to offset expenses attributed to geopolitical tensions, including conflicts involving Iran.
Fee Structures and Exemptions
Under the new pricing, United and Delta charge $45 for a first checked bag prepaid online, rising to $50 at the airport. American Airlines follows a similar tiered structure, with basic economy fares seeing baggage cost increases starting May 18. While third-bag penalties have increased by $50 across most carriers, exemptions remain for United MileagePlus Premier members, Delta SkyMiles Medallion members and premium cabin passengers.
Travelers are advised to prepay fees via mobile apps for a $5 discount where available. Southwest Airlines reported the largest percentage increase, with its first bag now costing $45. These changes mark the first fee hikes for United and Delta in approximately two years. Loyalty benefits continue to apply, with status holders and cardholders retaining complimentary baggage allowances across all major airlines.
