Pilatus Launches 32-Month Study on Composite Recycling for Aircraft
Swiss aircraft manufacturer Pilatus has launched a 32-month research study into composite recycling methods to reuse carbon fiber scrap from its production lines. The initiative targets prepreg off-cuts and manufacturing waste generated during PC-12 and PC-24 aircraft production, aiming to transform the material into certified aircraft components.
The research project will focus on mechanical and thermal processes to create new semi-finished products from composite scrap. Pilatus plans to qualify these recycled materials for use in structurally and functionally relevant aircraft parts, establishing a closed-loop manufacturing system while maintaining strict airworthiness standards and regulatory compliance.
The initiative positions Pilatus alongside larger original equipment manufacturers like Airbus in pursuing sustainability goals within aircraft manufacturing. Success in this project could establish new benchmarks for environmental responsibility in general aviation, particularly as the industry faces increasing pressure to reduce its carbon footprint throughout the aircraft lifecycle.
