Spirit Airlines Recalls 500 Furloughed Pilots Amid Bankruptcy Exit
Recall Notice Issued
Spirit Airlines issued recall notices March 9 to approximately 500 pilots who were involuntarily furloughed between September 2024 and November 2025. The airline said recalled pilots will return to duty within 30 days of receiving notice in accordance with collective bargaining agreement timeframes. The recruitment drive addresses pilot attrition that exceeded forecasts during the carrier's recent restructuring efforts.
Bankruptcy and Fleet Restructuring
The recalls coincide with Spirit Aviation Holdings preparing to emerge from its second Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing in 15 months. Under the new operational model, the airline is shrinking its fleet from more than 220 aircraft to fewer than 100 jets, concentrating service on high-demand travel periods and key hubs including Fort Lauderdale, Orlando and LaGuardia. CEO Dave Davis noted that creditors have continued to support Spirit's transformation while the carrier reduces debt from $7.4 billion to $2.1 billion.
