Incident Details

A Bell 206B JetRanger III helicopter, registration I-CHOP, crashed shortly after takeoff from a private residence in Solcio di Lesa, a hamlet in the municipality of Lesa, Novara province, Italy, on June 12, 2026. The aircraft struck trees and came down in the Lake Maggiore area, killing the sole occupant. The Aviation Safety Network categorized the accident as fatal with one fatality.

Investigation

Italian authorities, including the National Agency for Flight Safety (ANSV — Agenzia Nazionale per la Sicurezza del Volo), are leading the investigation. The U.S. National Transportation Safety Board has assigned event ID 20260623203222 for tracking purposes, though primary jurisdiction rests with Italian authorities. No cause has been determined.

Aircraft and Context

The Bell 206 is a single-engine light utility helicopter widely used in private and commercial operations worldwide. Safety records indicate that obstacle strikes during takeoff and landing from confined or improvised landing zones are a recurring hazard for this class of aircraft — a risk the Lesa accident appears to illustrate.
