A privately operated Cessna 180 Skywagon, registration N2479C, sustained substantial damage after overturning during landing at Arco-Butte County Airport near Arco, Idaho, on May 18, 2026.

According to a preliminary notice from the Federal Aviation Administration, the aircraft experienced crosswinds during the landing phase, resulting in a ground loop and subsequent rollover. No fatalities or serious injuries were reported.

Investigation Underway

The National Transportation Safety Board has listed the occurrence as an active investigation with status marked as "in work." Neither the NTSB nor FAA has released a final report regarding the probable cause.

Tailwheel aircraft such as the Cessna 180 are generally more susceptible to ground loops — a rapid, uncontrolled pivot around the main landing gear — particularly when operating in gusty or crosswind conditions. The investigation will likely examine weather data and pilot technique to determine contributing factors.
