A Croatia Airlines Airbus A220-300, registration 9A-CAN, veered off the runway at Split Airport on May 16, 2026, following a high-speed rejected takeoff. The aircraft, operating flight OU412 from Split to Frankfurt, accelerated to approximately 131 knots on runway 23 before the crew aborted the takeoff. The aircraft skidded to the left, exited the paved surface, and came to a stop in a grassy area after striking several runway signs.

All 130 passengers and five crew members were safely evacuated to the terminal without injury. Croatia Airlines confirmed that the cockpit crew aborted the takeoff in accordance with prescribed safety procedures. While the aircraft sustained minor damage, including to an engine cowling, no fire or structural failure was reported. The incident caused temporary disruptions at Split Airport, resulting in several flight cancellations and diversions.

Croatia's Maritime and Railway Accident Investigation Agency has launched a formal investigation into the excursion. Weather reports indicated winds of 17 knots gusting to 27 knots at the time of the event, though investigators have not yet determined if wind or technical issues contributed to the deviation. The Airbus A220 family maintains a strong safety record, with most recorded incidents involving non-fatal runway excursions or technical malfunctions.
