French-Registered Piper PA-28 Crashes After Takeoff in Northern Morocco, One Killed
A French-registered Piper PA-28 (F-GIEH) crashed shortly after takeoff from Cherif Al Idrissi Airport near Al Hoceïma, Morocco, on Sunday, June 21, 2026, resulting in at least one fatality. The aircraft was operating a private flight from Montpellier, France, to Tit Mellil, near Casablanca, with a scheduled refueling stop in Al Hoceïma, according to reports from Le360 and AFP.
Witnesses and local media reported the aircraft suffered a sudden, severe loss of altitude minutes after departure, crashing near the airport perimeter. The occupants — a male pilot and a female passenger — were transported to Mohammed VI Provincial Hospital in Al Hoceïma. Moroccan officials confirmed at least one fatality; the condition of the second occupant has not been officially confirmed.
Investigation Underway
Moroccan aviation authorities have secured the crash site, and the wreckage is undergoing technical examination. Investigators are working to determine whether the accident resulted from mechanical failure, pilot error, or other factors. No official cause has been released. The Piper PA-28 is a widely used single-engine light aircraft; loss-of-control events during the takeoff and initial climb phase are a recognized risk factor in general aviation.
