Nine Dead After Mid-Air Helicopter Collision Over Rio de Janeiro
Nine people died Sunday morning after two civil helicopters collided in midair over the Recreio dos Bandeirantes neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. One of the aircraft, a Eurocopter AS350 registered PR-DJJ, crashed into the yard of an electric vehicle dealership near Avenida das Américas at approximately 8:59 a.m. local time, triggering a massive fire that spread to parked vehicles and caused secondary explosions. There were no survivors.
Local television reports indicate one helicopter was carrying a pilot and four passengers while the second was piloted solo. The collision sent both aircraft down into a densely populated commercial area, with the resulting fire drawing a large emergency response from Rio fire and rescue crews.
Investigation Underway
Brazil's Air Force (FAB) and the Center for Investigation and Prevention of Aeronautical Accidents (CENIPA) have opened a formal investigation into the crash. Specialists from SERIPA III have been deployed to the scene to preserve evidence and establish the sequence of events leading to the collision, which has been logged by the NTSB under event ID 20260614203172. The identities of the victims and the operators of both aircraft have not yet been released.
